An intergalactic plea for help in the face of climate change
In 1977 NASA sent the Golden Record into space aboard The Voyager, containing sounds and images selected to portray the diversity and beauty of life and culture on Earth. The hope was that this 12-inch gold-plated copper disk would one day be found by intelligent extraterrestrial life forms. But a mere four decades later, as we grapple with the catastrophic impacts of climate change, we must face up to the reality that as a species, we are not steering the planet in the right direction. As Jean-Jacques Dordain, former Director General of the European Space Agency and Deputy Chair of the Karman Project highlights, “now is the time for us as human beings to transition from passive to active, disengaged to engaged. We cannot lose contact with our Earth.”
In honoring our collective responsibility to each other as fellow humans and to future generations,Terra Cene directors Rodrigo Inada & Nono Ayuso drive home the urgency of the message: A call-to-action to take care of all things we want to preserve.
This film tells the story of a 2021 re-make of the Golden Record. Only this time, it’s not so much about showcasing our beauty, culture, and evolution as a species, but rather a plea for help. As the directors put it: “We wanted to challenge our perception of time, while dissecting its motivations. Through a carefully crafted narrative that weaves through the past, present, and future, Terra Cene urgently questions who and what will be left to remember? If the end is built into the beginning, it is our responsibility to protect the future. We are guests here for only a moment.”
Terra Cene is a remembrance of things past and an observation of the interconnected nature of time on Earth. It delivers as its core the hauntingly hopeful message that reminds us of our duty to preserve the beauty of life on Earth. Space ventures help us to look inward by providing us with critical data and imagery as urgent reminders to protect our habitat. Together with the rising accessibility of advanced monitoring tools we are empowered to take action ourselves and pave the way into a new era: the terra cene, a new Earth epoch.
The film serves as an opportunity to think about the necessity of humans shifting from the spectator role of the Anthropocene into the actor role towards a more positive future. It introduces the series of ‘Return to Earth’ interviews as part of the documentary film experience The Space That Makes Us Human.
